Pompey after nearly 70 years...

Cardiff City 0 v 1 Portsmouth
FA Cup Final - Wembley Stadium. Att: 89,874
Saturday, 17th May 2008

Portsmouth had held the FA Cup for the longest period of any team due to the 2nd World War and having won the Cup in 1939. Since then they had not made it even to the Final but 2008 proved to be their year.

It was a year of shocks but produced an exciting final. Although none of the 4 semi-finalists were regarded as the 'big 4' and three of them came from the Championship they were all previous winners.

Wales came to London for the Final but they did not go home with the cup. Nwankwo Kano scored the only goal of the game after Cardiff 'keeper spilled the ball mid-way through the first half. His goal was not a classic but sent the Portsmouth fans into delirium as it was enough to see them through to victory.

Palace never made it in the play-offs so it did not turn out to be a prelude to next week's championship play-off for me but a thoroughly enjoyable day.
