Scunthorpe United 2 v 2 Barnsley
Championship - Glanford Park. Att: 6,897
Tuesday, 1st January 2008
A late, late goal by Barnsley from the penalty spot gave them a draw that they barely deserved. A an extremely disappointing first half appeared to be goal-less when the home side put together one of the few moves of the game so far to knock home from 8 yards. This goal was followed up early in the second half with a powerful run that split the Barnsley defence and then fired home for a 2-0 lead.
The visitors did not look capable of scoring a single goal let alone get back on level terms but drew a life-line after a free-kick hit the wall and rebounded perfectly to Grant McCann whose second attempt was fired into the roof of the net. Scunthorpe, who had fallen back having gone ahead now seemed to drift even further back and gave Barnsley space to play. 5 minutes of added time should have seen the Tykes camped in their opponents penalty area to get the equaliser but it wasn't the case and appeared to be too little too late.
With the referee glancing at his watch Barnsley did manage to get the ball into the area and it hit a defenders hand and the referee pointed to the spot. It was an easy decision and even at this late stage the complaints were few and far between. Howard made no mistake from the spot and the points were shared.
