Fulham 2 v 1 Bolton Wanderers
Premier League - Craven Cottage. Att: 21,102
Wednesday, 15th August 2007
This was an unexpected game to start my competitive season made possible by a spare ticket. The weather was awful with torrential rain for most of the game but it didn't seem to have any real effect on the game played on a splendid looking surface.
Bolton took the lead early on after an extraordinary mistake in the Fulham goal. An inoquous looking ball was safely collected by their goalkeeper, Warner, but he contrived to get into a tangle with Zack Knight's back and dropped the ball at the feet of Helguson who slipped the ball into the empty net. You could also hear the disbelief and despair amongst the home fans.
Fulham's play, however, was reasonable and it wasn't long before they equalised with a fine strike from Healy. Smertin put Fulham ahead a few moments later with a deflected shot that beat the Bolton goalkeeper.
There were no more goals but the game continued to be entertaining for the non-committed spectator. The football was not of the highest quality but the tension were evident as if, so early in the season, this was regarded as a relegation battle. In the end Fulham held on and secured the three points while Bolton look like they are to have a long and hard season.
